There Are Too Many Forms Online - HELP!

Legal Documents You Shouldn't Buy Online

In the years that I have practiced law, I have seen the rise of online websites that claim to revolutionize the delivery of legal services. They often provide you with access to information, but it's like trying to drink from a fire hose. Unfortunately, many places online have also become havens for misinformation and businesses are able to prey on consumers like you who have legitimate questions and need personalized information.

One of the most common culprits is the "One Size Fits All" website that claims to solve your legal problem, but is really just doing a mail-merge of your information into one of their forms. It's even more troubling when you later find out that the form you paid for them to mail merge was available on your local court's website for free. Often, if you simply called the local court, you could get help filling out the form and save yourself the $$$ that website charged you for an old mail-merged form.

After years of consultations with clients who have come to my office after using an online document assembly website and who now need help fixing their documents, I realized that there are four common categories of documents:

  • Health Care Power of Attorney
  • Estate Plan Documents (Wills and Trusts)
  • Loan Documents with Family
  • Prenuptial Agreements

These documents don't have to be complex and lengthy. Many of them are straightforward and can be efficiently prepared for you by an attorney.
